Google says that conditional love is love that is “earned” on the basis of conscious or unconscious conditions being met by the lover, whereas in unconditional love, love is “given freely” to the loved one “no matter what”. Loving is primary.
The last part of this struck something in me. It says unconditional love is given freely no matter what. When I read that it made me meditate on what God’s love truly means to me. It means that there is nothing that I can do that will make him love me any less. The thought of this makes me emotional because we as humans can be so fickle. Our love can be so conditional. We love you today, but tomorrow, not so much. Most times our love is predicated on how we “feel” that day.
When I tell you I am beyond grateful that God’s love isn’t set up that way. It’s not dependent on what you can or I can’t do for him. Isn’t that comforting to know? It gives me peace in knowing that he will never leave me nor forsake me, as flawed as I am. He’s there to hold my hand. He’s there to fill any void that my heart may have. This means that we can depend on him when life gets shaky. And when things are uncertain, his love will never fail.
