When my heart is overwhelmed…

Lately, I’ve had more happy days than sad ones. I can’t say that was the case a couple of years ago. My heart was overwhelmed, hurt and broken. There were so many things that weren’t going as planned. I’m a planner; and this, all of this, wasn’t apart of it. I have to confess, I like to be in control, and the mere thought of things being in disarray gave me anxiety. I was frustrated.

In the midst of my tears, I was reminded of the scripture, Philippians 4:6-7. It says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ”.

Now let’s be clear, this didn’t make my frustrations disappear. It did, however, bring me a sense of peace at that moment. It was the reminder that I needed that I’m not in control. And whatever it is that causes my heart to feel overwhelmed, he sees it and hasn’t forgotten about me. He is concerned with the matters of my heart. If he cares for the birds of the air, will our heavenly father not care even more still for us? So today, if your heart is overwhelmed, give it to God and leave it there. It’s going to take practice. I’m still working on it myself, but we’ll get there together.
